Managed Care and Culturally Diverse Populations

George Halvorson
President and CEO, HealthPartners

George C. Halvorson is President and Chief Executive Officer of HealthPartners. A 660,000 member health plan, HealthPartners is headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota and is one of the largest health plans in the United States. Mr. Halvorson is past chair of The American Association of Health Plans (AAHP), the national association of HMOs and was honored as œExecutive of the Year” by Corporate Report magazine five years ago.

Mr. Halvorson has more than 25 years of health care management experience. Prior to his current position, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Group Health, Inc. Before joining Group Health in 1986, Mr. Halvorson held several management positions with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, including Executive Director of HMO Minnesota. Mr. Halvorson also was Senior Vice President of Marketing, and Director of Planning and Budget for Blue Cross and Blue Shield. He has served as President of Senior Health Plan and President of Health Accord International, an international HMO management company, and continues to serve as a member of the Board for HealthPartners of Uganda.

Mr. Halvorson is past chair of the Group Health Association of America (GHAA), the largest national trade association for HMO's. GHAA merged with the American Managed Care and Review Association (AMCRA) to form the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP). He served as the first chair of AAHP. He was a member of the Minnesota Health Care Commission and serves on numerous boards. He was appointed to serve on the Minnesota State Commission on Health Care Access, the Commission on Regulatory Reform, and the Governor's Task Force on Violence as a Public Health Problem. He is also a principal voting delegate for International Federation of Health Plans. He is a frequent lecturer and writer on health care topics, and is the author of two health care books, including "Strong Medicine," published by Random House. A third book, "Myths, Lies and Misconceptions” is currently being written.
