Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey is the Director of the Institute
on Aging, Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Associate Executive
Vice President for Health Policy and the Sylvan Eisman Professor of Medicine
and Health Care Systems at the University of Pennsylvania.
From 1992-1994, Dr. Lavizzo-Mourey was the Deputy Administrator
of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research within the Department
of Health and Human Services. There she oversaw an annual budget of $150
million, lead the AHCPR's expanded efforts in HIV/AIDS research and research
involving minority populations and initiated a new funding program for
young investigators.
Dr. Lavizzo-Mourey's research is at the interface of geriatric
medicine and health policy, focusing specifically on disease and disability
prevention as well as health care issues among persons of color. Dr. Lavizzo-Mourey's
widely published in journals such as The Annals of Internal Medicine,
and Journals of Gerontology.
Dr. Lavizzo-Mourey has served on numerous Federal advisory committees
including the Task the Office of Technology Assessment Panel on Preventive
Services for Medicare Beneficiaries, the Institute of Medicine Panel on
Disease and Disability Prevention Among Older Adults, the National Committee
for Vital and Health Statistics where she chaired the Subcommittee on
Minority Populations.
Dr. Lavizzo-Mourey is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians
and member of the Board of Regents, the American Geriatric Society, and
the Association of Academic Minority Physicians, a member of the National
Medical Association, the Society for General Internal Medicine, the Association
for Health Services Research, and the Gerontological Society of America.
She is also on the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Lavizzo-Mourey earned her medical degree at Harvard Medical
School followed by a Masters in Business Administration at the University
of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. After completing a residency in internal
medicine at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts,
Dr. Lavizzo-Mourey was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical scholar at the University
of Pennsylvania where she also received her geriatrics training. She has
also held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and Temple University
