How the American Heart Association is Incorporating Cultural Competence into Its Way of Doing Business

Martha Hill, RN, PhD, FAAN

Martha Hill is a professor and the director of the Center for Nursing Research at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. She holds joint appointments in the School of Hygiene and Public Health and the School of Medicine. Dr. Hill is also the 1997-1998 president of the American Heart Association. She is director of the post-doctoral program at Hopkins’ School of Nursing and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
  Dr. Hill received her BS degree in nursing from Johns Hopkins University, her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania, and her doctoral degree in behavioral sciences from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Before coming to Hopkins, Dr. Hill was director of the Hypertension Outreach Program and coordinator of clinical research in the Division of Hypertension and Clinical Pharmacology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
  Dr. Hill is internationally known for her work and research in preventing and treating hypertension, particularly among the population of young, urban, African American men. She has published extensively and serves on numerous review panels, editorial boards, and advisory committees including the World Health Organization’s Patient Education Program and the Coordinating Committee of the National High Blood Pressure Education Program. Dr. Hill has also consulted on hypertension and other cardiovascular-related issues outside of the US including Scotland, Israel, and South Africa.
  She is currently working as principal investigator, co-principal investigator or investigator on three research projects funded by the National Institutes for Health for more than $4 million.  NEXT >
