Lessons from The Never-Ending Journey:
What We've Learned About Cultural Competence Training
Cultural competence: what is it? Why is it important? How
do we "do" it? These are some of the questions we will examine in this
session, which is designed to: 1) Increase participants' understanding
of the scope of cultural competence training and its role in delivering
effective prevention and intervention services; 2) Examine and analyze
different approaches to effective cultural competence training; and 3)
Identify resources and training opportunities for professional development
in the area of cultural competence.
The presentation will include some insights gained from delivering
THE NEVER-ENDING JOURNEY, a successful cultural competence training curriculum
developed for use in Texas HIV and STD programs. Some of the "lessons"
we may address include needs assessment for cultural competence training;
cultural competence vs. cultural sensitivity; how to encourage participants
to define culture and cultural competence; process models vs. outcome
models of training. Participants will have the opportunity to utilize
some experiential activities from the JOURNEY curriculum to gain a better
understanding of cultural competence training issues, learn about effective
training models, and generate action plans for using cultural competence
training to enhance their own program.
