3-3 Incorporating the cultural perspectives of communities and consumers into program development: Medicaid Access and HIV in New YorkThe presentation will discuss two separate but related issues of incorporating the cultural perspectives of communities and consumers into program development. First, the speaker will review efforts to create Medicaid manager care initiatives in diverse communities with a management model based on consumers and community based organizations. When the organizing was tried in the South Bronx, Upper Manhattan and North/Central Brooklyn very different outcomes were observed that reflected the diversity in each of the communities. Second, the presentation will discuss the importance of understanding the impact of immigration status and ethnicity in doing HIV prevention. Specifically the presenter will share the results of a series of focus groups of different ethnic populations on HIV prevention.
Mr. deLeón is a Mexican-American who grew up in Los Angeles. He attended Occidental College and Stanford University Law School. He practiced law for a number of years with private law firms, the United States Department of Justice, California Rural Legal Assistance and the New York City Law Department. In recent years he served as Chair and Commissioner for the New York City Department of Justice. He now serve3s as President of the Latino Commission on AIDS. The Commission addresses the diverse needs of the Latino community in combating HIV/AIDS. NEXT > |
