Bruce Vladeck has long been involved in issues of delivering health services to underserved populations, especially in urban communities. From 1993 through 1997, he served as Administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), which operates Medicare and Medicaid, in addition to other responsibilities. In that position, he initiated programs to improve customer service, incorporate measures of cultural competence into quality standards, and to work with Historically Black Colleges and Universities in new programs of outreach to Medicare beneficiaries, as well as overseeing development of the Medicare and Medicaid provisions of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997.
Before joining HCFA, Vladeck was President of the United Hospital Fund of New York, which engages in a broad range of grant making, research, convening, and educational activities to improve health services for New Yorkers. Previously, he had also worked at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the New Jersey State Department of Health, and Columbia University. He is currently Professor of Health Policy and Senior Vice President for Policy at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York.
Vladeck received his BA, magna cum laude, from Harvard, and an MA and PhD in political science from the University of Michigan. He has published widely on health care and health policy issues.  NEXT >
