Cultural Competence in Medical Education: Developing and Implementing Effective Programs

This presentation will review the current status of cultural competence training in undergraduate and graduate medical education based on a national survey. It will also explore a needs assessment of programs that have and are contemplating the development of educational programs. Dr. Danoff will describe several programs presently in place in medical schools to demonstrate the diversity of educational methods used for this topic. Dr. Lu will present on curricular developments in graduate medical education focusing on psychiatry. These model curricula will include Latino, gay/lesbian, women, American Indian and religion/spirituality patient issues. Finally, the issues of evaluation and outcomes measures will be considered.

Dr. Danoff is Assistant Vice President in the Division of Medical Education at the Association of American Medical Colleges. She is currently directing a project to enhance medical education in cultural competence and diversity. Her other responsibilities include work on professionalism and a study of the impact of changes in health care delivery on medical school’s educational mission. Prior to her appointment two years ago at the AAMC she was Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education at McGill University.

Francis G. Lu, MD, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco and Director of the Cultural Competence and Diversity Program in the Department of Psychiatry at San Francisco General Hospital, where he has worked for 21 years. In 1980, he established the first Asian Focus Psychiatric Inpatient Program in the country, which led to the development of five other focus programs caring for Black, Latino, women, gay/lesbian and HIV/AIDS patients; they were awarded a Certificate of Significant Achievement by the American Psychiatric Association in 1987. He has published and presented widely on clinical/systems cultural competence in mental health, psychiatric education, the interface between psychiatry and religion/spirituality, and the use of films/video to teach about cultural and transpersonal issues. He is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry Cultural Psychiatry Committee.  NEXT >
