Interpreter Associations

Although there are well-known national and regional organizations that represent interpreters/translators in the legal, business, and conference fields, professional organizations specifically for medical interpreters have been non-existent until very recently. Now a few organizations around the country are being organized to provide support to, and promote excellence in, bilingual medical interpreting.

Medical interpreting professional organizations have, and are, being created to:

  • Foster formal training and education of interpreters by promoting and establishing a core curriculum for theory and practicum
  • Develop performance and evaluation criteria (standards of practice)
  • Promote recognition of competency through credentialing either by certification, licensing or registration
  • Disseminate information; and, in some cases
  • Demonstrate organizational strength and presence

In this section you will find information about interpreter associations that specifically target medical interpreting as well as associations with a broader focus. In order to continue adding as much information to this section as possible, we would like to engage your assistance:

  • Are you aware of such professional organizations in your area?
  • Would you like to share information about such organizations with us?
  • Do you think the creation of a national bilingual medical interpreting organization is necessary? If not, why not?
  • If yes, would you be interested in working toward the creation of such entity?
