U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Developing a Research Agenda for
Cultural Competence in Health Care
Public Input and Listserv
As a followup to the development of national standards
for culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) in health
care, Resources for Cross Cultural Health Care will be facilitating the
development of a health services research agenda on cultural competence
in health care. As policymakers, accreditation bodies, and health care
providers begin to support health services that are culturally and linguistically
appropriate, questions inevitably arise about the intrinsic and relative
value of different approaches, methods, and programs.
With input from a research advisory committee and the public,
RCCHC will develop a research agenda intended to examine the research
base underlying the field of CLAS in health care, identify issues associated
with conducting research in this field, and suggest approaches for developing
and implementing a CLAS research agenda. The final document is intended
to be a guide for researchers and research funders interested in cultural
competence.
Public Participation
Please send an email to RCCHC@aol.com if you are interesting
in participating in any of the following activities:
- Helping us complete a comprehensive bibliography of effectiveness
research on cultural competence in health care. We are looking for the
following kinds of information:
- citations or abstracts of published research, including bibliographies
- brief summaries or abstracts of research in progress
- brief summaries of research projects being developed or contemplated
We are particularly interested in research investigating the relationship
between cultural competence interventions and health outcomes. We
will be compiling a master document that will be made available
for public use on the projects website, including researcher
networking and collaboration. All contributions will be fully credited,
although investigators submitting information on projects in development
can request that we not disseminate or publish their submissions.
Please send your submissions directly to the email address above.
- Joining the national CLAS research stakeholder network. We will be
developing a listserv for researchers, students, policymakers,
providers, advocates and other individuals interested developing and
promoting research on cultural competence. Modeled on a very successful
listserv for medical interpreters, the forum will provide regular updates
on the research agenda project and allow individuals to interact with
each other on critical research-related issues, such as methodological
challenges, data issues, funding sources, and development of research
projects on CLAS. Participants will also be notified when draft versions
of the research agenda are available for review and comment. If you
are interested, please send a brief description of your work and interest
in research on cultural competence in health care.
- Commenting on the draft research agenda. Organized by topic, a discussion
of the literature, key research questions, and methodological issues
will be posted online in Fall 2001. Readers are invited to comment
on the draft agendas through December 2001, and comments will be
considered for the final report. To comment, click on the link(s) that
interest you below.
Thank you for your interest in research on cultural competence
in health carewe look forward to working with you.
