Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS)

Organization:
Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ)

The Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) program out of AHRQ was developed to assess patients' and consumers' experiences within the health care system. Through the use of surveys in both ambulatory care systems and facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes, CAHPS provides usable, relevant information on quality of care. The surveys can also be used by providers throughout the health care system to assess where improvement in care is necessary in areas such as the communication skills of providers and the accessibility of services. These tools are therefore useful for providers wishing to assess and track progress over time for implementing culturally competent care, as well as develop benchmarks. In addition to culturally competent care, there is an item set for health literacy. Many of the CAPHS surveys are available in multiple languages.
