This policy brief discusses the increased attention given to multicultural issues such as minority utilization, language barriers, and provider diversity in mental health service delivery. The author discusses recent trends in demographic projections regarding the make up the U.S. population, as well as treatment outcomes, and implementation strategies. The brief concludes by making recommendations for how mental health agencies can maintain funding for culturally competent services by utilizing evaluation methods and the resulting data to demonstrate reduction in the inappropriate use of high cost inpatient and emergency services by ethnic minority clients.
