The purpose of this article is to describe the development of a set of quality measures to assess the quality of spoken language services in U.S. hospitals. The measures were developed for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation "Speaking Together" or "Hablamos Juntos" project aimed at improving the quality and availability of health care language services for patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). The article provides an overview of the Speaking Together project, outlines the development of the measures and early experiences with utilizing the measures. Any hospital wishing to assess the quality of their spoken language services would benefit from learning about the challenges the Speaking Together hospitals encountered implementing these measures for quality improvement.
