To meet the need for the development of criteria by which to plan or assess courses of study in cultural competence, the California Endowment produced this publication that provides guidance on content, training methods and modalities, evaluation and qualifications of teachers and trainers in cultural and linguistic competence. These Principles and Standards are designed to accompany the Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health Care (CLAS Standards). The Principles and Recommended Standards are written at a level of generality that makes them applicable to the education of all types of health care professionals. In particular, however, the Standards provide guidance in the design of cultural competency education with respect to content, pedagogical methods and the qualifications of teachers and trainers.
