Because the methods for collecting race, ethnicity and primary language data are disparate and, for the most part, incompatible across organizations and institutions in the health care sector the authors of this report conducted site visits to hospitals to provide a nationwide snapshot of current practices in race, ethnicity, and primary language data collection. This report details the results of these site visits and surveys of 1,000 hospitals about their data collection practices. The report concludes with recommendations from the authors about how to increase standardization of data collection by hospitals nation-wide.
