Language Services for Patients with Limited English Proficiency: Results of a National Survey of Internal Medicine Physicians

To determine whether internal medicine practices of members of the American College of Physicians provide language services and to better ensure effective communication for limited English proficiency (LEP) patients, the College conducted a survey of its members during late 2006. This white paper presents the results of this national survey including data on the percent of LEP patients that on average make up a practice, the language services provided, the cost of providing language services, and challenges and solutions to providing language services. The author makes recommendations for providing effective language services.
